The song was both written and produced by Lorde and Joel Little. Even though it is not as well-known as some of her other songs, "Buzzcut Season" is a popular track on Pure Heroine, and was critically acclaimed for its vocals and production. The song was debuted live.

The lyrics describe Lorde and her boyfriend, James Lowe, living by themselves apart from the society, and are conceptually similar to the lyrics of "A World Alone".

"Buzzcut Season" received generally positive reviews from critics. For example, Billboard described the production as a "tropical paradise" and praised Lorde's vocals. As of April 22nd, 2014, the official video has almost 4.5 million views.
