Melodrama is Lorde’s upcoming sophomore studio album. It is scheduled be released on June 16th, 2017.
In December of 2013, Lorde revealed to Billboard that she had begun writing material for her sophomore record.
In June of 2014, Lorde hinted that her next album would sound “totally different,” saying that "I wrote the last album about that world which was the suburb where I grew up and populated by my friends and people who were really familiar to me, now I'm in a different place every day and I'm with new people every day and it's a different vibe." She also explained that she wanted to “give people a little bit of breathing room” before she put out new material.
On December 31st, 2015, Lorde tweeted out that she had whispered the album title to her mother. She also tweeted out that she was feeling “quietly excited about 2016.”
Lorde hinted that she was working on the album on June 25th, 2016 with a post to Instagram, with the caption reading “it’s summer in the studio too.”
On August 23rd, 2016, Lorde replied to a comment on a post on Instagram, stating that she had finished writing the record and it was in the production phase.
On November 7th, 2016, Lorde posted a heartfelt note to Facebook, reminiscing over the past 4 years of her life. She states that “Writing Pure Heroine was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies, and this record - well, this one is about what comes next.” She explained that she would have new music soon.
On February 27th, 2017, An ad was played on New Zealand airwaves that teased the release of new music. The ad showed Lorde sitting in the backseat of a car, sipping on a drink, with an upbeat piano playing in the background. The screen then cuts to black, showing the dates “3.2.17 NYC 3.3.17 NZ.” Lorde also tweeted out the link imwaitingforit.com, which led to a website that played the video. New snippets were posted on imwaitingforit.com on the days leading up to release. The website these videos were on was titled M*******a, what teased the album name.
On March 1st, Lorde tweeted out a picture of a map with 3 pinpointed locations. Each location had a different teaser of her new single, officially titled Green Light.
Green Light was officially released on March 2nd, 2017. It was accompanied by a music video that featured Lorde in a city, intercut with scenes of her in a club, in the backseat of a taxi, and dancing on the roof of said taxi.
Lorde released a promotional single, titled Liability, on March 9th, 2017. She also revealed that the album would be released on June 16th, 2017.
Lorde performed Green Light and Liability on Saturday Night Live on March 11th, 2017.
It is rumored a second single will be released before the album's release. This single is apparently Lorde's favorite song on the album.
Two more songs, "Sober" and "Perfect Places" are confirmed tracks.
