"Team" is the third single released from Lorde's first album, Pure Heroine. It was written by Lorde and Joel Little, her producer. Its lyrics describe how Lorde's friends are her "team", and that they don't have to be rich and famous in order to be happy.

"Team" is very popular, and some consider it to be better than "Royals". It peaked at number six place on the Billboard Hot 100.

Production and CompositionEdit

"Team" was developed by Lorde and her producer, Joel Little while she travelling around the world. A moderate-tempo song, "Team" has influences from the pop, rock, electropop, and alternative genres. Within "Team", Lorde expresses her dislike for typical "party" songs with her lyric:

I'm kind of over being told to throw my hands up in the air, so there.

In addition, some people think that "Team" is a response to Miley Cyrus's popular song, "We Can't Stop".

ReleaseEdit

"Team" was leaked on September 13th, 2013. It was later released in the United States of America on November 19th, 2013, and was released to the United Kingdom on February 17, 2014.

ReceptionEdit

According to Brenna Elrich from MTV News, "Team" is an "insanely catchy jam". In addition, Lewis Corner from DigitalSpy,

Lorde muses about her homeland New Zealand, while serving up a smorgasbord of musical influences from hip-hop beats to electronic whims and a dash of rock-worthy claps. It's a formula that thrives on Lorde's angsty tones, with a hallowing voice we still can't quite believe belongs to a 17-year-old. It may not be destined to smash charts like its predecessor, but it's certainly more than enough to herald Lorde as an artist to invest in.

—Lewis Corner

"Team" also peaked at eigth place in the Billboard Hot 100.

The music video for "Team" was filmed in Brooklyn, New York, and was direct by Young Replicant. In an interview, Lorde explained the music video:

This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was Queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.
